U & I
|Original / Romaji Lyrics||English Translation|
KIMI no gohan ga tabetai yo
moshi KIMI ga kaette kitara
tobikkiri no egao de dakitsuku yo
I long for the taste of your cooking
So when you get back home
I'm gonna glomp you with a great big smile
KIMI no koe ga kikitai yo
KIMI no egao ga mirereba sore dake de iinda yo
I just wanted to hear your voice again
Just seeing your smile again is enough
itsumade demo isshoni itai
kono kimochi wo tsutaetai yo
I wanna be with you forever and a day
I wanna tell you that this is how I feel
KIMI wa soba ni ite kureta
me wo tojireba KIMI no egao kagayaiteru
You were always there when I needed you
Whenever I close my eyes I could see your smile shining brightly
satou to shouyu wa doko dakke?
moshi KIMI ga kaette kitara
bikkuri saseyou to omotta no ni na
Where do we keep the sugar and soy sauce?
And I was hoping that I could surprise you
When you come home
KIMI ga yasashi sugiru kara
KIMI ni moratte bakari de nani mo ageraretenai yo
Because you're too good to me
You gave me so many things that I can't even get to pay you back
konna hibi ga zutto zutto
tsuzukunda to omotteta yo
And I thought that we would always, always be together
As days go by
atarimae ja nai koto ni
That it really isn't the case
ima wa jishin nai keredo
warawanai de douka kiite
omoi wo uta ni kometa kara
I'm not so sure of myself right now but
Don't laugh, okay? Please listen to me
'Cause I'm gonna put all my feelings into this song
uta ni nosete todoketai
kono kimochi wa zutto zutto wasurenai yo
And send it to you through this song
This is a feeling I will never, ever forget
With corrections by Serei.
There are many ways to interpret the song title from the surface, but obviously as we saw from events in Episode 17, it is an allusion to the name of Yui's little sister Ui.
Other interpretations include:
You and I
Yui herself (English "You" + Japanese "I")
'yuuai', "partnerly love" (Japanese phonetic interpretation of the English letters)
Even 'utoi', "estranged" (Replacing & with 'to', Japanese particle for "and").
My own overly-fanciful suggestion is to take the on-reading of Ui's name kanji (憂, 'yuu', "grief"), add it with the radical for 'person' (as the "I") which will become 優, the kanji for "gentleness", Ui's character in whole. (This is ultimately why Ui was given that "depressing" kanji as her name in the first place, she "warms up to people around her").
