Composer: Nakajima Yuubi

Original / Romaji LyricsEnglish Translation
Haru no nioi mo mebuku hana mo
Tachi sukumu atashi ni kimi wo tsurete wa konai
the scent of spring and the budding flowers
will not bring you back to me as I stand paralyzed
Natsu ga kuru goro wa akegata no ame
Shizuka ni yorisotte kakera hiroi atsumeru
when summer comes it's rain at dawn
drawing close to you, I gather up the fragments
Aki ga sugitara kitto atashi wa
Nobita kuroi kami wo kirioto shite shimau
After autumn passes, surely I will
cut off the black hair that I'd let grow
Itoshii hito yo hanare kao nante mikka mosurya sugu ni wasurete shimatta
Tada shimitsuite kienai no wa tabako no nioi
Oh, beloved I completely forgot the sight of your parting face after only three days
still, the thing that's sunk in and won't disappear is the scent of your cigarette
Kimi wo matsu hibi wa tarunai setsunai nari yamanai
Fukyoiwaon ga hibiki atte
Sore ga atashi no karenai tokenai nari yamanai
Kodoku no uta
rai rai rai...
The days that I wait for you are too few too sad constantly sounding
the dissonances ringing together
that is my unwithering unmelting constantly sounding
song of solitude come come come...
Kasuka na wakare wo tadayowasu kotomo naku
Ashioto wa totsuzen zetsu kireta
Aa kanashiku mo utsushiki shiroi fuyu
without even giving the faintest hint of farewell
the sound of your feet suddenly cut off
oh the melancholic and beautiful white winter
Aeru mono naraba hoka ni nanimo nozomanai
Furitsumoru wa ano hi mo yuki
Kimi wo matsu hibi wa tarinai setsunai nari yamanai
Fukyouwaon ga hibiki atta
Sore wa atashi no karenai tokenai nari yamanai
Kodoku no uta
rai rai rai...
if I can see you I will wish for nothing more
what fell and piled up was snow then, too
The days that I wait for you are too few too sad constantly sounding
the dissonances ringing together
that is my unwithering unmelting constantly sounding
song of solitude come come come...
Kodoku no uta rai rai rai
song of solitude come come come...

Translator's note: 'Ukifune' is the name of a female character from the tale of Genji (in the latter, Uji-based chapters) who, having mistakenly committed adultery with a man, plans to drown herself but is saved and becomes a nun. In terms of the tragedies she endures and what she represents as a character, comparable to 'Hamlet''s Ophelia. Her name means 'drifting boat'.
As for the song itself, the 'rai rai rai' used as a chorus is fairly standard except that the band has chosen to use the character for 'come', read as 'rai', to represent it. Other grammatical touches reminiscent of Classical Japanese are scattered throughout the song.
